A typical application for our
FLEXcnc-II controls package as a retrofit application, is it's use
to control this heavy-duty vertical turning machine.
The primary use of the machine is
to perform inside & outside profiled turning on very hard
materials. This machine is used in a casting facility that focuses
primarily on manufacturing large parts such as those found in
constructing rock crushing machines.
Prior to conversion to CNC
operation the machine had an approximate 20% rejected-parts
problem, due to incorrect tolerances and inconsistencies on the
part of operators. After the conversion, the rejected parts from
this machine, immediately fell to almost zero. Programs are
written off-line & installed in the controller via either
network-connection or the on-board floppy-disk drive. The
simple-to use operator, control station allows non-CNC trained
operators to perform all, regular, work without their needing to
write CNC programs.
The machine frame was constructed
using existing castings, standard screws were installed &
standard brushless servo motors & drives were used in each of
two 2-axes-sets of motion.
Each of the X & Z motion sets
is controlled via a separate MCNC140A controller but the
controllers share a common interface set. This provides the
ability for the machine to cut both an inside & an outside
profile, at the same time.
