A typical application for our PScnc-II
controls package is to control this 3D-Router table which was
converted from a Stepping motor based machine to a Servo motor
based CNC machine using our PScnc-II controls package.
The primary use of the machine is
to produce one-of 3D profiled parts, representing geographic
scaled models for various purposes such as site planning for major
projects & such as site displays for public parks. The cost
justification for the project was that the higher speeds available
with servos, along with smoother profiling could produce more
parts, faster at better finished condition, requiring less
hand-finishing to complete.
The machine is especially useful to
this manufacturer of models because of the implementation of our
"points-mode" software that allows processing of very
large cutting files. These files are generated by either
converting CAD originated DXF files or by down-loading digitized
maps from the USGS (or other) Web-site.
The machine frame was purchased
from a machine vendor that only offers stepping motor based
controls. Standard belt-drives were used & standard PMDC servo
motors & drives were used in the 3-axes of motion. We
implemented a variable speed spindle control using a
Variable-frequency drive controlling a specially wound
router-motor. Our PScnc-II controls package was used with FLEXcam
software running in the front-end computer. The availability of
full CNC functionality in the controller, with a
"white-box" PC used for the interface, allows operators
to perform any work this shop may require.
